Four decades of marine electric propulsion
COMBI was founded in 1979 in Giethoorn the waterside town often called the Venice of the Netherlands with a mission to provide hire vessels with environmentally responsible propulsion. More than four decades later, hundreds of COMBI electric motors power boats carrying residents and visitors through the town’s waterways every day.
The company later expanded into a larger modern production facility in nearby Vollenhove. Its dedication to purpose-built marine electric-drive systems has established COMBI as an international supplier of high-performance propulsion solutions for the maritime market.
After first developing electric outboards, COMBI expanded its in-house range to include inboard systems. Air and liquid cooled motors from 5 kW to 50 kW are available, together with POD and hybrid configurations. The systems are compact, practical, easy to install and designed around a plug and play philosophy.
A COMBI installation delivers virtually silent propulsion with very little vibration, creating a notably more comfortable experience on the water.
What COMBI stands for

Inboard systems
Why COMBI inboard
Watercraft built during the past 75 years were generally designed around an internal combustion engine. With cleaner propulsion now playing a central role in both present and future marine projects, COMBI can support every stage of a conversion and tailor a solution to replace the existing engine in almost any vessel.
Complete systems are also available for new leisure, charter and commercial vessels. COMBI electric-drive systems can be fitted to virtually any existing shaft and propeller installation, helping owners benefit from quiet running, very low vibration and modern electric propulsion.
The systems are compact, with many components integrated into the motor. Plug and play cable connections simplify installation, and the motor is supplied ready to mount. Electric operation removes high fuel costs, keeps maintenance requirements low and provides a long lasting, environmentally responsible propulsion solution.
Motor options
COMBI inboard motors are available as AC asynchronous units in air or liquid cooled versions and as brushless permanent-magnet motors. Each configuration has specific advantages depending on the vessel, duty cycle and installation. All can be used as a direct drive for silent, comfortable cruising, with technical guidance available to select the most suitable option.
Easy installation
Flexible mounts allow COMBI’s compact inboard motors to fit most engine beds. Cooling systems are available for both fresh and salt water operation, and every system follows COMBI’s plug and play electrical connection philosophy.
- Compact electric drive package
- Compatible with many existing shaft installations
- Air and liquid cooled configurations
- Low maintenance and minimal vibration
- Suitable for conversions and new builds
E-Thruster Outboards
Why COMBI outboard
Whether the vessel uses tiller steering or a remote steering system, COMBI E-Thrusters provide a smooth and practical electric outboard solution. Long and short shaft versions are available in both standard outboard and tiller steered configurations.
E-Thrusters are exceptionally quiet, allowing passengers to enjoy the water and the surrounding environment without engine noise or harmful local CO₂ emissions. The hydrodynamic design combines modern motor technology with high efficiency at low power.
Simple, robust and proven
COMBI develops and manufactures its products in-house, maintaining close control over quality and durability. E-Thrusters are designed to withstand the everyday demands of charter and commercial service while also providing a long lasting leisure solution. The original COMBI 500S units entered service in 1981; examples have accumulated close to 40,000 operating hours, demonstrating more than four decades of reliable use.
Standard or tiller version
The standard outboard houses all components within the unit. The tiller version uses a remotely mounted control box and is particularly suitable for an engine well installation. COMBI’s mechanical throttle is designed to stay securely in position and withstand frequent operation.
Remote steering
A dedicated fitting kit allows an E-Thruster to integrate with an existing remote steering arrangement.
Specifications
The heavy duty E-Thruster range is available from 1 to 3.5 kW, with short and long shaft options. Depending on unit size, 24 or 48 volt DC motors are used, and a tilt function is available.
- Near silent propulsion
- Low maintenance brushless motor technology
- Standard, tiller and remote steering options
- Designed for leisure, charter and commercial duty
Nautic POD systems
Why COMBI Nautic POD
COMBI Nautic POD systems follow the same durable, reliable and efficient philosophy as the rest of the range. Each system is built for long service life and maximum practical performance. A control box and side-mounted joystick are supplied as standard, creating a ready made plug-and-play package that can be installed without extensive specialist knowledge.
Using asynchronous AC or synchronous brushless permanent magnet motors, the Nautic range is quiet, environmentally responsible, user friendly and low maintenance. Both fixed saildrive and steerable POD versions are available. Custom arrangements including integration within a rudder blade can also be developed.
Unique features
Hydrodynamic design, robust materials and brushless motors make the Nautic POD efficient, powerful and long-lasting. Seawater resistant stainless connectors improve durability, while stepless speed control manages the advanced power electronics. Integrated forward/reverse switching in the joystick allows single handed operation.
Systems are supplied pre built, with the drawings required to prepare the vessel for installation. Technical support is available for owner , yard or self-installation projects.
Fixed saildrive or steerable POD
The fixed Sail Drive POD works together with a rudder. Where greater manoeuvrability is required, the steerable version can be controlled by tiller or steering system and mounted in the rudder trunk. Its compact body provides a powerful solution in a robust casing, while the external control box can be installed flexibly with or without an aluminium mounting plate.
Customised twin drive solutions are available for catamarans and other vessels requiring two propulsion units.
Specifications
Available capacities range from 1 kW to 15 kW. Depending on motor size, systems operate at 24 or 48 volts DC. Steerable POD shaft lengths of 0.45, 0.55, 0.70 and 1.00 metre are available.

Hybrid systems
Why COMBI hybrid
The COMBI Hybrid provides a dual-propulsion solution that combines a trusted combustion engine with clean, quiet electric running. Owners can cruise silently under electric power while retaining the range and higher output of the conventional engine when conditions or the voyage require it.
When the combustion engine is operating, the COMBI E-drive can generate electrical power to recharge the battery bank. This combination offers the benefits of emission free local cruising together with the reassurance of conventional propulsion for longer passages or deteriorating weather.
Broad vessel and engine compatibility
The compact, water cooled E-drive can be adapted to many diesel engines and virtually any propeller shaft. Standard bracket or skid kits support installations with engines from manufacturers including Nanni, Yanmar, Vetus, Solé and Volvo. High-quality brushless components keep the electric drive efficient and virtually maintenance free.
How the system works
The hybrid unit is designed to run at the same speed as the existing engine. Under engine power, the electric motor operates as a generator and replenishes the battery pack. When electric mode is selected, the vessel benefits from quiet propulsion and very low vibration.
Installation formats
COMBI’s plug and play philosophy and compact construction simplify installation. Bracket and skid configurations allow the system to be integrated into a wide range of engine-room layouts and new build projects.
